I think the "attach on traditional marriage" is sort of a James Dobson tag line against gay marriage legislation. I think at the heart of the issue, that no one really says, is that there's a strain of belief within Christian thought that the milestone that marks the beginning of the demise of a civilization is the general social acceptance of homosexuality. I believe this to really be the core belief that drives many anti-homo-Christian politics.

It took me years of saying 'If he wasnt' such a strong Christian, I'd really think that guy was gay' to realize that one didn't preclude the other.

Going to a university that I have been told many times is much like Cedarville, I have seen this struggled played out on campus. Res Life Staff actually put homosexuals in the same rooms to "keep them from influencing others." I have seen the negative connotation this all has. I didn't used to think this, but seeing how my university handles the topic, I now believe that the Church, as in the full body of Christ, has failed. I do not see how rejecting someone completely because they are gay is imitating the same Jesus who saved a harlot, healed the lepers, and hung out with people most of us would "vote out" of the church. Our job, as Christ followers, is to love them where they are and show them Christ and a way to eternal salvation. God will take care of the heart change. We can't change someone's heart and mind, but God can (Romans 12:2). We can only provide the tools.

Kevin,
Always good to read your writing. Very thought-provoking. It seems many of the things that Christian people deem as "big" sins evoke the same response ... shunning instead of love and compassion for the person. That doesn't mean condoning what the person is doing, but I've seen far too often completely disassociating with people who are really struggling before we've been Jesus to them. How many times am I guilty of the same thing?
Thanks for the eye-opener.
Love you,
Sheesh
